Cycling is one of the biggest sport in Rwanda, bicycles are one of the main forms of transport in the country.
Over 100 days in 1994, more than a million Rwandans were slaughtered in the genocide against the Tutsi. The country was left with the almost unimaginable challenge of how to rebuild a broken society.
Cycling, and other sports became part of a concerted effort by the government to help create a peaceful society, including investment in the construction and promotion of new sports infrastructure and events.
With the participation of international professional riders from all over the world, cycling, through Tour du Rwanda saw big changes and raised its bar.
According to 2030 National Sports Policy, the vision of Rwanda is to have Rwanda Population living a healthy life through the practice of sports in all sector of life and Achieve international Sports Results at individual, Community, organization, and Business.
In February 2019, Tour du Rwanda was upgraded from a 2.2 to a 2.1 UCI category race, making it Africa’s second race with 2.1 badge, after Gabon’s La Tropicale Amissa Bongo
