Belgium has officially named its riders for the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Kigali, Rwanda (21–28 September), unveiling a squad built to give Remco Evenepoel every chance of success on the African continent.
The men’s elite team will be spearheaded by Evenepoel, who already holds two time trial rainbow jerseys and the 2022 road race title. Supporting him are some of Belgium’s finest all-rounders and climbers: Tiesj Benoot, Victor Campenaerts, Quinten Hermans, Xandro Meurisse, Cian Uijtdebroeks, Ilan Van Wilder, and Florian Vermeersch.
Remco Evenepoel’s World Championship highlights
Road race: Remco Evenepoel won the Elite Men’s Road Race at the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia. That was his only road race world title so far.
Time trial: He won the Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial at the 2023 Worlds in Glasgow, Scotland. He successfully defended his title in 2024 in Zurich, Switzerland.
A squad fit for all the challenges of Kigali 2025
Team manager Serge Pauwels emphasized the importance of this selection, noting that the Kigali course with over 5,000 metres of climbing and the decisive Mur de Kigali ascent deep into the race demands riders who can endure and support Evenepoel until the final kilometres. With Wout van Aert, Tim Wellens, and Maxim Van Gils absent, the squad reflects a balance of climbing strength, tactical depth, and loyalty to their leader.
Among the notable inclusions, Uijtdebroeks and Van Wilder bring climbing legs suited for Rwanda’s altitude, while Meurisse has been highlighted by Pauwels for his ability to stay competitive late in tough races. Campenaerts and Benoot add valuable experience, while Vermeersch and Hermans provide depth on rolling terrain.
Belgium has also confirmed its women’s elite team, featuring Justine Ghekiere, Marthe Goossens, Marieke Meert, Julie Van de Velde, and Margot Vanpachtenbeke.
For Evenepoel, Kigali represents not only a chance to reclaim the road race rainbow jersey but also an opportunity to add another milestone to his already remarkable career. With the Belgian federation rallying behind him, the mission is clear: protect their leader and aim for glory on Africa’s biggest cycling stage.
